Saint-Lizier: 2000 years of history

PATRIMONY

The church of Saint-Lizier contains an ensemble of 11th century frescoes constituting the first great roman paintings of the pyreneen region. The work of an Italian studio working in St-Lizier around 1080, they show in the lower register an incarnation cycle and in the superior register a college of apostles.

This ensemble is completed in the north apsidiole by paintings from the same era illustrating the heavenly Jerusalem.
The 18th century pharmacy is in the Hotel Dieu which is currently a retirement home. It can be visited every day but you should check with the tourist office to find out what time; given that the room is very small the number of visitors is limited to 20.

The roman cloister adjoining the church is a haven of peace.
  
The treasure of the bishops of the Couserans displayed in the ancient sacristy ajoining the roman cloister includes crosses of ivory and silver, the reliquary bust of Saint Lizier and an important collection of gold objects.

The style of the oldest capitals belongs to the second workshop of the Daurade Church in Toulouse.


The Bishops' Palace, constructed in the 17th century, dominates the city.

The palace is currently close for renovation of the museum and of Notre Dame de la Sède as well as construction of a holiday apartments.
