Polaris Challenge FAQs

Where is the Challenge centre?

The Challenge is run from the Holiday Estate of Petit Paradis near the commune of Camarade in the Ariege. Grid Ref 5116,30882 It is run over 2 maps as the centre is in the middle of a map area (IGN2046Oand IGN2046E)
The centre is 1 hour south of Toulouse. And 9kms from the nearest Commerce.

Is there accommodation?

The accommodation is based on people sharing bedrooms in the houses on the estate. The accommodation ie the houses cater from between 2 – 14 people and there are 7 houses. Sheets and towels are provided.
Each house is equipped with kitchen facilities so you can cook your own food should you wish.
There is also a field that is available for camping. This is very basic. There is water and a chemical loo. Although showers are usually available in the houses on a first come hot water basis. Camping is free.

Is there food available?

We will provide cooked food for evening meals at a modest price for good wholesome filling and nutritious food. Breakfast of rolls and cereals is included in the accommodation price. If you want to bring your own food that is ok too, if you have the space in your luggage. There are a number of good restraints in the area for the people who wish to hire a car at the airport. I do not recommend cycling to them as they are at least 10kms away.

How do we get there?

As we are close to Toulouse airport, I recommend any of the low cost airlines which fly there. There will be a pick up service arranged to and from the airport on Friday and Monday. Car hire is inexpensive in France and gives you that little more freedom.

What should we bring?

A bike is a good idea!! Along with spare tubes.
The weather is usually ideal cycling weather, around 15 degrees C although the temperature drops considerably when the sun goes down, so layering systems are good with a light weight waterproof. A fleece is recommended for the evenings.

What’s the terrain like?

We are in the foothills of the Pyrenees so it is very undulating. The centre is at 504 metres and you will climb to around 1500 or so but the views are spectacular. The area is known for its natural beauty and wild boar and large birds of prey are a regular sight. Also November is the middle of the hunting season so watch out for hunters with very large guns.
