In leaving the village of Seix you will easily find the hamlet of Esbintz located at the end of the valley, at 850m elevation, on the GR10 hiking transpyrenean hiking trail. You can go no further with a car. It's the end of the road and there you'll meet another world: that of the mountain farmer. Watch a video about the farm.
We have been living on this site for over thirty years. We raise sheep, Castillon horses, donkeys, chickens, cats, working dogs on our organic farm. Francis and his son Mathias herd the sheep on the pastures in the high mountains during the summer. They also cut hay for the winter. Gila and her daughter Isabelle look after the farm and the gîtê. You may follow us, if your heart desires, in our daily life on the farm during your stay.
The gîte is a traditional Ariège house. The sitting room with kitchen corner and woodburning stove allow you to simmer your own soup if you wish. Or you can elect to eat with us in the house, where Gila serves succulent dishes and stews.
In the large dormitory, which sleeps 10 people, you can rest or dream during the day. Don't forget to bring your own sleeping bag or bedding.
In summer (June through September) the life of the gîte follows the rythm of walkers, to which other users must adapt. During this period the gîte is open to long-distance walkers as well as those making day walks. Outside of the summer season the gîte can be rented for your exclusive use.
Esbintz is an ideal spot for easy walks as well as the departure point for long hikes.
You'll discover all facets of traditional mountain life here. In the hamlet children can roam freely, commune with the animals and play with Gribouille the donkey, a great friend to children.
In the mountains you can observe wildlife: isards (chamois), marmots, birds, raptors (vultures, eagles, hawks)...
In Seix and in the surrounding area numerous activities are possible. For the sporting, kayaking, rafting, horseriding, paraglidin, treeclimbing, skiing (Guzet-Neige is 25 kms away).
For the culturally inclined, you can visit the center for interpretation of local traditional life as well as caves and numerous romanesque churches.

Extra charge for wood for heating in winter: 2 € / person A meal is always available for walkers. Families or groups arriving by car must book in advance. |
