About the route
Between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic is a walking trail that is intimate and full of character: the "chemin du Piémont Pyrénéen" or the Pyrenees Foothills Trail, also known as the GR78. It passes through the Corbières, the Couserans, the Comminges and the Bigorre regions to join up with the Arles to Oloron-Ste Marie route.
It's in Revel that this route branches off to the south to Fanjeaux and follow the length of the Pyrenees in the foothills, thus offering the pilgrim the possiblity of reaching Spain via numerous cols or passes depending on the season and the opportunities for accommodations.
At Carcassonne, pilgrims arriving by air join those walking from Narbonne, passing through Montréal, Fanjeaux and Mirepoix.
In Ariège-Pyrénées, this route follows an axis through Mirepoix - Col du Portet d'Aspet via Pamiers, Le Mas d'Azil, Saint-Lizier, Castillon-en-Couserans in the direction of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. It has been classified as a "Grande Randonnée" walking trail (GR78) from Mirepoix to Lourdes.
The Ariège section is about 140 km and can be walked in several stages of approximately 20 km.
A topoguide « étapes ariégeoises » with a list of resources (accommodations, restaurants, shops, services, transportation and a description of the itinerary) has been published by the F.F.R.P (Féderation Française de la Randonnée Pédestre) which can be purchased for 4 € + plus postage from the Saint-Lizier Office of Tourism.
